Makeup and magic… You might be wondering what they could possibly have to do with each other…
When I was a young girl, I used to watch in awe as my beautiful mother put her ‘face’ on. I gazed up at the mirror as she applied different layers of makeup, and watched her transform into an exotic version of the woman I knew. I slowly discovered that makeup had a mysterious power to turn the familiar into the extraordinary.
As I grew into a young woman, I chose a career in cosmetology. At seventeen, while I was still in high school, I was accepted to a cosmetology program in Maryland. The program was offered in a nearby town, so I rode a bus back and forth everyday to continue my high school education. After a year of doing that, I moved to Montana, where my classes were much closer to home. There, I graduated from high school and cosmetology school at age eighteen. I was finally ready to enter the professional world!
For the next twenty years, I worked and learned in many different hair salons, under many diverse owners. My career progressed and matured until ultimately, I was able to open my own salon. After a few short years, my business was thriving! Owning my salon slowly opened up a creative side that I did not know existed.
I started to feel like my career as a beautician was no longer challenging or satisfying. I knew it was time to expand my line of work. I longed to use more creativity and originality, to find that passion once again. Most of all, I wanted to discover more magic.
At this point in my life, my children were grown and my supportive husband agreed that the time was right for me to go back to school. It was time to follow my dreams. I was going to do special effects and create movie magic!
After endlessly researching all the possibilities, I chose to enroll in Westmore Acadamy, in Burbank, California. While immersed in their master program, I experienced what some would call a defining point in my professional life. The Westmore instructors guided us through an exciting learning experience that I’ll never forget. My passion was renewed.
As I venture into the magical world of professional makeup and special effects, now comes the time for me to share the magic with you!
Special thanks…
I would like to thank everyone at Westmore Academy, with special thanks to Christie Leister, my beauty instructor. Also to Mark Bussan, who taught me the dying art of beard-laying, among many other things. And to Michael Pack who took me deep into the world of special effects. Thank you!
Artfully yours,
Peggy Bettencourt
